Just like mites, lice can be a problem on goats. Lice are very tiny brown bugs with lay eggs in the hair of your goats. They itch terribly and spread like wildfires. It is very easy to treat your goats for lice, and you can purchase over the counter shampoos and powders for treatment. Be sure, however, to thoroughly clean and disinfest your goats living space and treat all of your goats simultaneously at the first sign of lice. Lice are not dangerous, but they are persistent.

Ringworm is another common skin disease for goats. Ringworm, unlike its name suggests, is actually a fungal infection which looks like a worm. Ringworm is a raised circular patch on the skin, which can come in clusters. It is often coiled or completely circular and resembles a worm under the skin. Ringworm can be red around the edges and scaly. Ringworm is contagious, so be sure to check all of your goats for this fungus. Ringworm is also easily treated and your vet can prescribe anti fungal ointment for your goats.

If you notice a lumpy patch in your goats wool, you may want to check for a fungal condition known as lumpy wool. Lumpy wool causes patches of goat hair to be short and bristly, or causes completely bald spots on your goat. The goat may have oozing sores on the bald spots and treatment is definitely necessary. This fungus is caused by damp weather conditions and unclean pens, so make sure to clean your goats pen as soon as possible and as often as possible to help prevent the growth of fungal infections.

If at anytime you suspect your goats may have one of these, or any other, fungal infection, make sure to contact your veterinarian right away. A vet can properly diagnose fungi and parasites of goat skins and prescribe the best treatment.

If you have recently slaughtered a goat for its meat and skin, make sure to skin the goat right away. This will allow for easier removal if the skin from the meat and will help preserve the goat meat itself for later use. Once the goat has been slaughtered, use a rope to tightly hang the goat from a wooden beam or sturdy tree branch. It is important the goat does not fall during the skinning process.

Next, you will begin making incisions in the goat to assist in removing the goat skin. The first incisions should be circular incisions made around the top joints of the legs of the goat. Next, make a circular incision at the neck of the goat. These are the beginning and end places for skinning the goat. Incisions will then need to be made across the goat from leg to leg and straight down the middle from the neck incision to the tail of the goat.

Once all of the incisions have been made, firmly grasp the skin at the neck incision  between your thumb and fingers and pull the skin away from the meat. Although there will need to be a lot of strength used for tearing away the skin, it should be a clean process. The skin, which is attached with ligaments, should tear away smoothly from the meat, therefore a knife is not needed to skin a goat. If you come to a place where you are having difficulty tearing the meat, using a sharp knife is okay. Be sure, however, not to slice through the goat skin and be careful not to injure yourself.

Continue to skin the goat at all of the incision points. When you get the joints of the legs, you may need to cut the skin away from the leg joints using the knife. Once all of the skin has been removed, you can quickly preserve the meat for later meals and clean and tan the goat skin for future use. This is the easiest method used for removing goat skins.

In order to clean goat skin you will require distilled white vinegar, linseed oil, small dish and soft lint free cloths. First begin with mixing equal parts of vinegar and linseed oil in a small dish. Next dip a corner of a lint free cloth into the cleaning solution. Rub this cloth gently on the goat skin in a tight circular motion with the wet corner of the cloth. Repeat the process by dampening a new section of the cloth each time the previous corner dries out. Continue with this until all the goat skins have been evenly coated in the vinegar and linseed oil mixture. After this, wait for 30 minutes. Now polish the goat skin leather with a new clean cloth. Rub gently on the goat skin with a fast circular motion until the leather surface appears less dull and more light reflective. If there is still a white haze after polishing, add leather conditioner to the surface of the goat skin.
