Usage Of A Goat Skin

Goat skin is the skin of the goat. The skin of the goats are tanned at the tannery and used for many things. Tanned leather from goat skin is commonly used to make rugs and carpet binding since it is extremely durable. Traditionally, kefir was made in the bags of goat skin. In Spain goat skin was traditionally used in shape of containers to store and carry wine. It is also used for products like making gloves, jackets, boots and many other things. goat skins are available in different quality of grades depending on the breed of the goat. Black Bengal breed, native of Bangladesh is rated as the breed of goat which provides very high quality goat skin.

058 02a Usage Of A Goat Skin

The goat skin leather is sold in three basic forms –

Full-Grain goat skin leather – It is produced from the finest raw material which has been preserved in its natural state. The natural full-grain surface leather will wear better when compared to other goat skin leather. Instead of wearing off, the goat skin tends to develop a natural state called as ‘Patina’ which will make it more beautiful by each passing year. To keep the full-grain leather produced from the goat skin in its natural state, best efforts are made to retain its originality. Only the hair from the skin is removed. The grains remain in its natural state which gives the leather more strength and hence resulting in extended durability. Due to the preservation of natural state the grain, the full-grain goat skin has natural breathability which results in greater comfort. The finest furniture and foot wear is produced from full-grain stingray leather.

Corrected-grain goat skin leather – This is the second type of the goat skin leather. It is smooth on one side and fuzzy on the other side. The smoother side is one where the hair and the grains are removed for making it corrected-grain leather. Corrected-grain leather is usually produced from the goat skin raw material which is of inferior quality. The hides, which are not of high quality, will have all the natural grain sanded off and then artificial grain is applied on it.

Suede – This is the third basic type of leather produced from the goat skin. It is the interior split of the hide which is fuzzy on both the sides. Suede is less durable when compared to full-grain and corrected-grain leather and hence making it cheaper than the other two leathers. It is cheaper because many pieces of suede can be split from a single thickness of hide, whereas there can be only one full-grain or corrected-grain piece that can be made from the goat skin.

Features Of Goat Skins

goat skins are widely considered to be tough skins which are made into leather after some gruesome tanning. Any hide acquired from goat is considered as long lasting and common. Goat skins are used in making rugs, carpet, blankets, gloves and many other leather and fur products. Goat skin is used in many areas including for manufacturing of decoration of homes. Leather is clearly the most common derived form of goats hide. The trade of goat hide is a great business in many countries. Almost about 60% of the total goat skins obtained is used in making leather shoes. The remaining 40% of the skins around the world is used in making other leather products.

058 01a Features Of Goat Skins

Goat skins have way too many high quality features. The skins of the goats are always sorted out according to their quality even before the animal is either sacrificed or slaughtered. Goat skins are also brought in very raw forms for being tanned from different countries around the world. When the animal is killed, the flesh pieces on it are removed before putting it into salt water. It is then dried in a cool and dry place. The goat hide is then tanned by the use of chemicals and solutions. This is when any kind of fleece is removed and the skin is straightened. The skin is then shaped and cut in the required dimensions. Only highly trained professionals are allowed to do this because the whole procedure requires high quality precision to derive high quality leather.

Goats have been around from many centuries and are considered the most domestic of all animals that graze. Goats are slaughtered for both their meat and skin. Ironically, they are equally useful to humans when dead as they are when alive. Goat skins are used in producing leather of highest quality as it is softer and lighter than a cow hide. Apparently, the skin of goat is thicker and stronger than that of a sheep. Only in rare places is the goat skins upper skin layer used for writing purposes.

It is surprising to see that a domestic animal like goat which usually looks quiet can provide us with several usages of its hide. While it is important to note that goat skins are extremely useful; making sure that goat skins are not misused is also a point to be noted.
